Imitation of the Hand 2003
Custom software, real-time video processing
Live video input is used to create still images that appear to be created with pencil, charcol, watercolor, and paper.
The digital is used to create a convincing simulation of natural media. This "deception" raises suspicions: this seemingly sincere or straightforward artistic intention is not what it seems.
Once a Professor of Drawing complimented these "drawings", having assumed they were done by hand, with charcoal on paper. When it was explained that there was no hand involved, the Professor became a bit upset, as if threatened.
I should have explained better...despite appearances, these "drawings" were certainly not about to put any skillful hands out of work. There is no competition; the world is big enough for both sincerity and its opposite.
